CBD and Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

The hardest and most challenging thing about trying to deal with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is that it’s never the same. Could CBD help with premenstrual syndrome?

While cannabidiol (CBD) could potentially help with some of the symptoms of PMS, it’s not believed to target PMS specifically. Instead, CBD could help to treat some of the symptoms associated with PMS or PMT.

Both anxiety and depression are two of the psychological symptoms associated with PMS. Early studies into social anxiety disorder on humans have shown us that CBD could have some potential benefits in the area. Other studies into animals have suggested that CBD could have antidepressant properties.

Sleep is one of the essential parts of maintaining robust mental and physical health. If you are dealing with insomnia during PMS, it’s going to put an incredible amount of pressure on you both physically and mentally. A study conducted on rats by the University of São Paulo found that mild doses of CBD helped increase total amounts of sleep and also alertness during the day.

One of the most prevalent symptoms associated with PMS is menstrual cramps that can be extremely painful. The Pain Research and Management Centers at the University of Utah believe that the endocannabinoid system has demonstrated a ‘significant interface with pain homeostasis.’ Cannabidiol and the maintenance of the Endocannabinoid System appear to work closely together.

Treatments for premenstrual syndrome are still very case-specific, and there is no magic cure.

It’s because of how many different symptoms and the severity of these symptoms that PMS is so hard to treat. Many women with severe PMS symptoms use prescription antidepressants, hormonal contraceptives, and NSAIDs.

Many of the early trials and studies that we have mentioned above could have some potential in the treatment of the physical and psychological symptoms associated with PMS. However, we still have a long way to go before we fully understand whether CBD could help with PMS or even PMS itself.

Any successful treatment of PMS needs to be taken for what it is and can’t be automatically applied to every woman or every case of PMS.
